Chapped lips are a result of drying up of the lips and they being devoid of all the moisture. Unlike skin in other parts of the body, lips do not produce natural oil, thus, they are much more prone to drying up. Chapped Lips, can be causes by exposure to extreme climate, allergy to a product and dehydration. Dry lips if not attended on time, may lead to swollen lips, roughness, pain and bleeding. Generally, we have an habit of licking our lips when thy are dry. This makes the condition even worse. Saliva dries up quickly, leaving the lips even more dry than before.
Causes of Dry or Chapped Lips
Lips that are dry or chapped often appear red or rough. They become sensitive and tender and may also bleed if there is too much dryness. The lips may also crack and peel. Dry weather is the most common cause of dry lips. The skin and lips becomes parched in such weather. The sun can also sap the moisture out of the lips, leaving them dry. In some cases insufficient intake of the B vitamins can also causing dryness of the lips. Licking the lips frequently keeps them coated with saliva. Saliva contains chemicals that work on the delicate membranes of the lips, causing them to become dry and tender. Smoking of cigarettes can also rob the natural moisture from the lips and leave them rough and dry.
Signs and Symptoms of Chapped Lips
Chapped Lips are characterized by dry, cracked, flaky and sore lips that can affect people from time to time at any time of the year. Occasionally, Chapped Lips can be can be painful, embarrassing, and uncomfortable because they can interfere with many daily activities, such as smiling, eating and talking. Common signs and symptoms include dryness, redness, tenderness and sensitivity, cracking, splitting, peeling, and pain.
Minor lip dryness can be healed by simply removing the cause of the dryness or using some of the home remedies listed below. However, if dry lips are causing inflammation and bleeding, it is strongly recommended that you consult with your doctor immediately since it can lead to severe infection.
Apply certain remedies to get rid of chapped lips:
1. Excessive use of lipsticks on the lips too makes them dark and dry. At times let them breathe without putting anything on them. Before applying lip color apply some lip balm or moisturizer on your lips to keep them moist.
2. Always put petroleum jelly or lip balm on the lips while going to the bed.
3. One old remedy of healing dry cracked lips is applying butter or pure ghee into the naval. Oldies say that it makes the lips smooth and heal the cracks faster.
4. Soak rose petals in raw milk for few hours. Then make it a paste and apply on the lips to keep them pink and smooth. This helps the lips to retain their lost color.
5. Milk cream can be applied many times on the lips to remove the dry dead skin and to make them smooth.
6. Never peel the dead dry skin from the lips. Keep on applying petroleum jelly, lip balm or milk cream on them and the dry skin will go automatically.
7. Apply moisturizer-based lipstick on the lips then the dry ones.
8. Applying glycerin on the lips with a little honey to it too is quite helpful in healing the cracks of the lips and to make them soft and smooth.
9. Applying castor oil on badly dried lips helps them to retain their smoothness.
10. Always go in the sun wearing sunscreen on your lips. Otherwise lips get dry, dark and patchy.
